The Santa Cruz Mountains border Saratoga to the south and east, offering residents immediate access to redwood forests, state parks, and hiking trails over 3,000 feet in elevation.
The Santa Cruz Mountains form a ridge of peaks and canyons running north to south through central California, from the San Francisco Peninsula south toward Monterey Bay. The range separates the Santa Clara Valley—where Saratoga sits—from the Pacific coast to the west. Major peaks in the mountains exceed 3,700 feet, including Loma Prieta at 3,786 feet and Mount Umunhum at 3,486 feet. State Route 35, known as Skyline Boulevard, follows much of the ridge line and provides scenic access through the mountains.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California's oldest state park established in 1902, encompasses 18,000 acres of coast redwood forest in Santa Cruz County and includes over 81 miles of trails. Henry W. Coe State Park, a 87,000-acre preserve of the Diablo Range, sits just across Santa Clara County. Castle Rock State Park offers rock climbing and hiking along the crest of the mountains themselves. The Bay Area Ridge Trail, a regional hiking path that will eventually extend from San Francisco to Monterey Bay, passes through the Santa Cruz Mountains near Saratoga.
